Alex Galchenyuk Enters NHLPA Player Assistance Program

Coyotes Forward Apologizes for Behavior

Posted July 6, 2023

Veteran forward Alex Galchenyuk is entering the NHL and NHLPAs player assistance program after being arrested last week, sources told ESPN. Galchenyuk apologized Tuesday for the "horrific behavior" he displayed during his arrest last week.

On July 1, the first day of NHL free agency, the Coyotes announced they were bringing back Galchenyuk. However, sources told ESPN that Galchenyuk's arrest had raised concerns within the organization. Galchenyuk was repeatedly used racial slurs toward a police officer in training and threatened to have two officers killed during a traffic stop last week.

Galchenyuk's apology did not address the specific allegations against him, but he said he was "deeply sorry for the hurt and pain" he had caused. He also said he was committed to addressing his issues and becoming a better person.

The NHL and NHLPA have not commented on Galchenyuk's situation. However, the NHL has a policy in place that allows players to enter the player assistance program for a variety of reasons, including substance abuse and mental health issues.
