Matthew Boyd was born on February 23, 1989, in Mercer Island, Washington. He attended Oregon State University, where he pitched for the Beavers from 2008 to 2011. Boyd was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round of the 2011 MLB Draft.
